May was born at 50 Clarendon Street, Landport, Portsmouth, on the 13th January 1909.
Although her mother was from Dorset, her Father was of Scottish descent. A sailor in the Royal Navy, he was presumably at that time based at Portsmouth.
May was 5 years of age when she lost her father, John, in 1914 and the family was at that time living in Stewards Court Weymouth (off of Governers lane). I have yet to establish when they moved back.
May had two sisters, and elder sister called Kate Marion, and a younger sister called Jessie Winifred Violet.
I know little of her early years, but I recall her telling me that times were hard. She told me that at her school, there were children who were barefoot, as they couldn’t afford shoes.
To help make ends meet, her widowed mother used to take in lodgers or ‘Bed and Breakfast’ guests, which she continued to do for many years. She often told me how, during the war years her mother had some commandos staying, and that they often-left ammunition and weapons down the side of the sofa!
May met my grandfather, Albert William George Ayles, after she had arranged a date with another man. He couldn’t make it so sent my grandfather in his place. Luckily for me they got on well and were married at Weymouth Baptist Church on the 4th March 1934.
After the wedding they lived in a house at 136 Radipole Lane, and it was whilst living here that, in March 1942, May gave birth to my father, Michael John Ayles.
The family moved in 1947, to 1 Holyrood Terrace, Holly Road, Weymouth Dorset. They paid cash for the brand new house, built to replace a house that stood on the site but was bombed in the war. This house was to be rebuilt exactly as it’s predecessor, but my grandparents paid to have one of the five bedrooms built as a bathroom.
May lost her husband in September 1977, and after that time lived for her family.
In the early 1990’s her health began to fail, and she suffered from Aplastic anemia. Fortunately her health never really gave her any suffering, and she led a full life until her death on the 21st March 1993, at the age of 84.
